How difficult is it for you to conceive there are people in this country that cannot read nor write?

I, too, was surprised when I looked up the stats sometime last year. ... But I know for a fact reading and writing are being taught in the schools here! I think those who don't speak proper English or even don't speak English at home are a high percentage of these people because it is hard to sound out words when you have heard them mispronounced all your life. Also the dyslexic have a really tough time. And also the homes unlike yours whose parents don't ensure their children are reading at home and don't read to their children. My grandson has been asked to read at home on a regular basis since he was in kindergarten. This is considered homework but many kids don't tell their parents they're supposed to do this and the parents don't look at the Newsletters sent home by the teachers.
i sorta find it hard to believe. ... ... but im not too surprised though. i mean, what do people expect these days when they have all these big schools and classes full of 30 or so students and only 1 teacher, and then councelors putting students in any old class just to put them somewhere? ... ... while it is true, that irrelevent things are being taught, i think the problem lies more in the fact that we have wayyyy too many students in one school and not enough teachers and supplies and time to really focus on each student.

Not difficult at all. I just heard on the radio last week that Michigan has the lowest literacy rate in the country. Here's one stat I pulled: " ... In Michigan, Seventy percent of prisoners scored in the two lowest literacy levels of the National Adult Literacy Survey. I think it's a disgrace that students are passed on to the next grade without the proper skills they should have learned the previous year. It's time to educate students according to their ability to learn and not by age. Learning starts at home and kids need their parents to do their job before they're sent to school and there we need good teachers who are willing to work with the kids so they do their best and learn something.

- Not that hard ,I ran into many that couldn't read at a level to get by .Some had a child or spouse that did all the reading .A man I worked with Father ran a business and my friend and his mother did all the paper work.
